The Los Angeles Rams signed former Northwestern quarterback and now wide receiver Kain Colter, who became the team’s first free-agent signing since leaving St. Louis.

Colter was out of the NFL last season. He spent all of 2014 on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad as a wide receiver but was released in May.

Colter played mostly quarterback in college for Northwestern. He also spent some time at receiver, catching 63 passes for 683 yards in four seasons.

Colter was the leader of a unionization movement at Northwestern, attempting to make the football team the first players’ union in college sports. The bid failed at the federal level last August.

“Thanks to the Los Angeles Rams for giving me another opportunity to play football and earn a spot on the team,” Colter wrote Tuesday on Instagram.
