Washington Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams underwent surgery on his thumb and will miss Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Williams underwent the procedure to repair a dislocated thumb that he suffered in last weekend’s game against the New York Giants.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden on Friday did not give a definitive timetable for the absence of Williams.
“We will take it week to week,” Gruden told reporters, per the Washington Post.
Gruden also ruled out running back Chris Thompson and wide receiver Jamison Crowder for Sunday’s matchup.
Williams has been named to the Pro Bowl each of the past six seasons and has made 113 NFL starts. The 30-year-old Williams was the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Ty Nsekhe is expected to start in Williams’ place. The 33-year-old Nsekhe has played in seven games this season but has not started any. He has made 11 starts in his NFL career, and this is his fourth season with the Redskins.
Thompson was unable to practice Friday due to a rib injury suffered in last week’s game at the New York Giants. He missed two games before returning to the lineup last weekend. Thompson has 28 catches in five games, including a career-high 13 for 92 yards in Week 2 against Indianapolis.
Last season, Thompson posted 39 catches for 510 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 64 times for 294 yards and a pair of scores. Kapri Bibbs will serve as the third-down back in the absence of Thompson.
Veteran Adrian Peterson has carried the backfield load for Washington. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after rushing for a season-high 149 yards on 26 carries versus New York.
The 33-year-old highlighted the performance with his second touchdown of the day — a 64-yard score — late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Crowder will sit out his fourth straight game because of his ankle injury.
