Running back Chris Thompson was unable to practice Friday due to a rib injury suffered in last week’s game at the New York Giants.

Thompson was joined on the sideline by offensive tackle Trent Williams, who remained away from practice due to a dislocated thumb suffered against the Giants.

Williams was scheduled to see a specialist to determine whether he needs surgery. The biggest issue for Thompson, the team’s top pass-catching back, is a matter of pain tolerance.

NFC East-leading Washington will go for its fourth consecutive this week against the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

Thompson had missed two games before returning to the lineup last weekend. He has 28 catches in five games, including a career-high 13 for 92 yards in Week 2 against Indianapolis.

Last season, Thompson posted 39 catches for 510 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 64 times for 294 yards and a pair of scores. Kapri Bibbs will serve as the third-down back if Thompson can’t go.

Veteran Adrian Peterson has carried the backfield load for Washington. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after rushing for a season-high 149 yards on 26 carries versus New York.

The 33-year-old highlighted the performance with his second touchdown of the day — a 64-yard score — late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Williams has been named to the Pro Bowl each of the past six seasons and has made 113 NFL starts. The 30-year-old Williams was the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

If Williams cannot play, Ty Nsekhe would start in Williams’ place. The 33-year-old Nsekhe has played in seven games this season but has not started any. He has made 11 starts in his NFL career, and this is his fourth season with the Redskins.

Redskins wide receiver Jamison Crowder has been ruled out of Sunday’s game, the fourth straight contest he will sit out because of an ankle injury.
