Washington Redskins starting right guard Brandon Scherff sustained a torn pectoral muscle during the third quarter of Sunday’s 38-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, according to a report.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Scherff’s situation based on the initial diagnosis. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the severity of the injury.
Starting left guard Shawn Lauvao sustained a knee injury during Sunday’s game for the Redskins (5-3), who are also without starting left tackle Trent Williams. The 30-year-old Williams, who has been named to the Pro Bowl each of the past six seasons, is sidelined after undergoing thumb surgery last week.
“Losing two starting guards is hard,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “You dress a backup tackle. I think we had to move Ty (Nsekhe) in there at guard. Not good.”
With Scherff sidelined, Tony Bergstrom shuffled to right guard and rookie Geron Christian made his NFL debut and played left tackle.
“I come into the game thinking I’m playing heavy tight end, but I end up playing both guards,” Bergstrom said, via the Washington Post. “It’s just how it is. … You study your position, but when you’ve got time you take a minute to look at the other positions.”
