New York Giants running back David Wilson should be cleared at a July 21 exam of his surgically repaired neck.

Giants owner John Mara said Wilson should be “ready to go” for training camp. Mara made the comments Thursday at a YMCA charitable event.

“We expect him to be playing,” Mara said.

Wilson had a season-ending neck injury in Week 5 last year and underwent surgery this offseason, but was not cleared for contact as he expected prior to minicamp.

Wilson has made no attempt to hide his anxiousness regarding gaining medical clearance to resume a full range of football activities that includes contact. While surgery on his neck in which he had two vertebrae fused together in January continues to make progress, it is possible his contact exposure will be limited in camp.

The Giants drafted Boston College running back Andre Williams, signed unrestricted free agent Rashad Jennings and re-signed Peyton Hillis.

Wilson was on the field for many OTA and minicamp practices, but the team held him out of anything that might expose him to any potential contact.

Wilson liked what he saw of the new Giants’ offense and what it means for him assuming he gets cleared to play in it, according to ESPN.com.

“I just like the schemes, personally,” Wilson said. “I like the options I have and the way I can use my athletic ability. I think I really could play a role in this offense.”

Wilson said he enjoyed the learning part of new coordinator Ben McAdoo’s offense.

“Yeah, I’ve been getting a lot of mental reps, and I think that helps,” Wilson said. “I learn better when I’m watching and I have a visual in front of me. I see guys running. I see their mistakes, and I see what they do right. I feel like I could tweak things that they do excellent and I think I need to pick up. I’ve been very observant in practice, asking a lot of questions.”
