Free agent quarterback Johnny Manziel was indicted by a Dallas grand jury on a misdemeanor assault charge, multiple media outlets reported Sunday night.

The case, which stems from an incident involving Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, on Jan. 30, was presented to a grand jury on Thursday. An announcement about the indictment is expected to be made Monday.

Crowley told police that Manziel hit her, causing severe injury to her ear, at a Dallas hotel and later hit her on the way back to her apartment. She said she lost hearing in one ear and told a TV station she ruptured an eardrum.

A protective order was granted against Manziel, who was told to stay 500 feet from her home and pay $12,000 in legal fees. According to multiple media reports, Manziel and Crowley reached an out-of-court settlement on any potential civil charges.

The Cleveland Browns cut ties with Manziel in March, part of a parade of entities that have distanced themselves from the former Texas A&M star and Heisman Trophy winner.

Erik Burkhardt resigned as Manziel’s agent in February, and the man who took over that role, Drew Rosenhaus, resigned from the position Tuesday.

Nike ended its sponsorship deal with Manziel, and a deal with sports collectibles company Panini reportedly expired.

Manziel recently was accused of trashing a rental house in West Hollywood, Calif.

Through all the difficulties, Manziel issued a statement Tuesday that read, “I’m hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now, so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016. I also continue to be thankful to those who really know me and support me.”

In two pro seasons after Cleveland made him the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 draft, Manziel appeared in 15 games and compiled a 2-6 record as a starter. He completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,675 yards and seven touchdown passes while throwing seven interceptions.
