Pitt defensive end Rashad Weaver will miss the 2019 season after suffering a torn right ACL in practice, dealing a big blow to the defense.
Coach Pat Narduzzi said Friday that Weaver, a redshirt junior, will undergo surgery. He tore his ACL on Thursday in what Narduzzi called a non-contact injury.
Weaver started all 14 games last season and had 6.5 sacks. He led the Panthers in tackles for loss (14) and fumble recoveries (three).
He was a preseason All-ACC selection by several outlets.
“This is one of those that just makes you sick to your stomach as a coach,” Narduzzi said. “Something you never want to see happen. We all know it’s part of the game, but just not what you want to see.”
Narduzzi said Weaver will act as an unofficial coach on the sidelines.
Deslin Alexandre, John Morgan and Habakkuk Baldonado are among the players who could step in for Weaver.
“Those guys are always one snap away from being that next man in,” Narduzzi said. “We’re going to miss Rashad dearly. I feel bad for him. It’s not easy to sit with the doctor and hear that news come out. And then to go break it to [Weaver], it’s one of the ugliest days you can really have.”
Pitt finished 7-7 (6-2 ACC) last season. The Panthers open the 2019 season at home against conference rival Virginia on Aug. 31.
