Washington State extended football coach Mike Leach’s contract through the 2024 season Thursday.

The one-year extension, announced by athletic director Pat Chun, follows a 6-6 regular season by the Cougars in Leach’s eighth year with the program.

“Mike Leach has established, and continued, a culture of success at Washington State, both academically and athletically, that few have matched,” Chun said in a statement. “He has returned WSU to national prominence, is one of the top football coaches in the nation, and we are fortunate to have him leading our program.”

The announcement came as rumors swirled that the 58-year-old Leach was being considered for the coaching vacancy at Arkansas.

Leach has compiled a 55-46 record at Washington after going 84-43 in 10 seasons at Texas Tech (2000-09). The Cougars are anticipating their fifth straight bowl invitation.
