The Philadelphia Phillies continue to be bitten by the injury bug in the infield, as second baseman Jean Segura is expected to miss the next three weeks with a strained left groin muscle sustained in Tuesday night’s game.

Phillies general manager Sam Fuld told reporters Segura’s injury was a Grade 1 groin strain.

The Phillies have already been playing for more than a month without starting shortstop Didi Gregorius, who has been out with swelling in his elbow.

Segura, the team’s leading hitter with a .332 batting average this season, was hurt while beating out an infield grounder in the top of the ninth inning in the Phillies’ 5-3 road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was immediately replaced on the bases by backup catcher Andrew Knapp.

The 31-year-old Segura, who ranks fifth in the majors in hitting, has three homers and 20 RBIs in 49 games.

The Phillies called up rookie Nick Maton to help make up for Segura’s loss. The 24-year-old has hit .252 with two homers and eight RBIs in 39 games with Philadelphia this season.

Manager Joe Girardi provided an update on outfielder Bryce Harper, who also left Tuesday’s game early with lower back tightness. Girardi said Harper would not play in Wednesday’s series finale but is expected to be back Friday in the first of a three-game set at San Francisco.
