UCF named Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush as its starting quarterback Thursday.

Knights coach Josh Heupel said in a statement that true freshman Dillon Gabriel will also play in the Aug. 29 season opener against Florida A&M.

Wimbush, Gabriel and redshirt freshman Quadry Jones spent fall practice vying for the starting job.

“We’ve been pleased that all three quarterbacks have played at a high level during fall camp,” Heupel said.

Wimbush transferred from Notre Dame in January and emerged as the front runner for the starting job after Darriel Mack Jr. injured his ankle over the summer in a non-football activity.

Wimbush amassed 2,606 passing yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions during his Notre Dame career, adding 1,155 rushing yards and 16 rushing scores.

Wimbush started the first three games for the Fighting Irish in 2018 before being replaced by Ian Book on Sept. 22 at Wake Forest. Wimbush started his final game in place of an injured Book on Nov. 10 in South Bend, a 42-13 victory over Florida State. He passed for three touchdowns in that contest.

Wimbush finished 13-3 as a starter for Notre Dame.
