After backing up star quarterback Trevor Lawrence the past two seasons at Clemson, Chase Brice has decided to find another place to play, announcing Thursday on Twitter his intention to transfer.

“During my time at Clemson, I’ve wanted to stay the course and be the best quarterback, best competitor, best student, best person and best teammate I could be and tried to represent the Clemson Family with as much class and character as I possibly could,” wrote Brice, who started at in Clemson in 2017. “And while it’s both exciting and sad to say, today, I’m announcing my intention to transfer from Clemson and continue my college football career elsewhere.”

The Georgia native led Grayson (Ga.) High School to the 2016 state championship.

As a graduate transfer who is expected to receive his degree in May, Brice will be eligible to play in 2020. He redshirted in 2017, and in the past two seasons completed 82 of 136 passes for 1,023 yards and nine touchdowns, with four interceptions. He rushed for another 187 yards on 30 carries with one score.

The roommate of the starting QB did make an effort to become a hero in 2018, replacing an injured Lawrence, who was making his first college start, and helping to lead a comeback victory over Syracuse as the Tigers scored 14 fourth-quarter points to win 27-23.

Brice went 7-for-13 passing for 83 yards, throwing one interception. He did lead Clemson on a 94-yard drive late in the game that brought words of praise from head coach Dabo Swinney, who said after the victory, “I’m telling y’all, this kid can play. I’m not surprised. We recruited him — he was one of the top 15 quarterbacks in the country. Won a state championship. He’s got a lot of swag. A lot of moxie. He can sling it.”
