Despite rumors to the contrary, Florida State’s athletic director said the school had no interest in pursuing Urban Meyer to become its next head coach.
The Seminoles are 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference under second-year head coach Willie Taggart, who most definitely has been feeling the heat from Florida State fans and alumni.
Reports have circulated that Florida State would target Meyer to replace Taggart.
FSU athletic director David Coburn told the Tallahassee Democrat on Tuesday that, “If Coach (Taggart) were hit by a bus tomorrow, we would not target Coach Meyer, period. I say that with all due respect to Coach Meyer, but we would not target Steve Spurrier either.”
Spurrier, as did Meyer, at one time coached Florida State’s intrastate rival Florida. Meyer (two) and Spurrier (one) each led the Gators to national championships.
Florida State is 8-11 overall under Taggart following Saturday’s 22-20 road loss to Wake Forest. The Seminoles went 5-7 last season and missed being in a bowl game for the first time since 1981, ending the nation’s longest active streak of bowl appearances.
For a Sept. 21 victory against Louisville, Florida State played before its smallest home crowd (46,530) since 1983.
“We just need to focus on winning football games and our fans need to focus on coming out and supporting this team,” Coburn told the Democrat.
