James Williams, a safety/linebacker ranked as one of the top high school football players in the nation, committed to Miami on Tuesday.
Williams, who has played for American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., and Western High in Davie, Fla., made the announcement on Twitter. The other finalist for his signature was Georgia, but he also received offers from LSU, Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson, according to 247Sports.
“I will not be leaving the Sunshine State of Florida and Shutting down my recruitment and will be signing to the University of Miami. And I will always and forever rep my city to the day I die,” he wrote, in part.
247Sports rated Williams as the country’s No. 1 athlete and No. 11 overall prospect, and the top overall player from Florida. ESPN slotted him as the No. 33 overall prospect, and he became the eighth member of ESPN’s top 300 to join the Hurricanes’ recruiting class — all of them from south Florida.
Williams had 62 tackles and six interceptions last season after registering 64 tackles and four INTs the prior year. He played for American Heritage before transferring to Western for his junior season. Williams transferred back to American Heritage earlier this year.
He is listed as being 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5 and around 220 pounds.
