Pro Football Hall of Fame member Ed Reed is returning to his alma mater after being hired as chief of staff of the University of Miami football program on Thursday.

Reed, 41, will serve as an adviser to coach Manny Diaz. The school described Reed’s role as covering “all aspects of the football program, including strategic planning, quality control, operations, player evaluation and player development.” Reed will also provide assistance in team building, student-athlete mentorship and recruiting, as permissible under NCAA rules.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ed back to Coral Gables,” Diaz said in a statement. “He is not only one of the most decorated players in Miami football history but also a devoted Cane who cares deeply about this program. All of our players, coaches and staff will be fortunate to tap into his experience, knowledge and passion on a regular basis.”

Reed played strong safety for the Hurricanes from 1997-2001 and was a consensus All-American in each of his final two seasons, including Miami’s 2001 national championship team. He had nine interceptions as a senior and set a school mark with 21 career interceptions. He returned four picks for touchdowns during his college career.

Reed was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, one year before he was enshrined into the pro football version.

Reed had 64 career interceptions in 12 NFL seasons from 2002-13 and returned seven for touchdowns. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004.

Reed earned nine Pro Bowl berths with the Ravens and also recorded 643 tackles, 13 fumble recoveries, 11 forced fumble and six sacks.

He was a first-round pick of the Ravens (24th overall) in 2002.
