Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tate Martell has opted out of the 2020 season, according to a report by the Miami Herald.
Martell, who transferred to Miami from Ohio State before last season, was suspended for the season-opening game against UAB and reportedly was left off the QB depth chart altogether for Saturday night’s game against No. 18 Louisville.
Neither Martell nor the team have confirmed the move.
Houston graduate transfer D’Eriq King led the Hurricanes in a 31-14 win over UAB, with N’Kosi Perry, a junior, also seeing some action. Freshman Tyler Van Dyke reportedly was the other quarterback listed on the depth chart.
Martell, 22, was a four-star recruit from powerhouse Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas and was ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation in the Class of 2017.
He redshirted at Ohio State in 2017 and sat behind Dwayne Haskins in 2018, appearing in three games. He completed 23 of 28 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown and added two scores on the ground.
Martell has completed one pass for seven yards during his stint with the Hurricanes, who are ranked No. 17. He spent some time at wide receiver in practice last season, but never played the position in a game. In five games in 2019, he also carried the ball seven times for seven yards.
