In the wake of the University of Miami’s worst-ever football defeat, a 58-0 loss to Clemson, coach Al Golden was fired Sunday.

Assistant coach Larry Scott was appointed interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Athletic director Blake James said in a prepared statement, “Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community. However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men.”

In five seasons at Miami, Golden compiled a 32-25 record. The Hurricanes made bowl games twice in his tenure, following the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Miami is 4-3 overall this season with a 1-2 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Clemson was ranked sixth and moved up Sunday to No. 3 in the nation.

“On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity,” Golden said in a statement released by the school. “I believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have some outstanding young men in our football program. Though this moment is difficult, we wish the Canes the best of luck going forward.”

Scott was in his third season as Miami’s tight ends coach and running game coordinator. He previously was on the staff of the University of South Florida for eight years.

During Saturday’s blowout home loss, former Miami stars such as Warren Sapp and Bryant McKinnie took to social media to call for Golden’s ouster.

The Hurricanes’ previous worst defeat was a 70-14 setback to Texas A&M that concluded the 1944 season, a year when Miami went 1-7-1.
