GAME BREAKDOWN

KEY MATCHUP: Syracuse QB Eric Dungey will challenge North Carolina’s defense with both his running and passing. Dungey leads the Orange in rushing with 435 yards and seven touchdowns and has passed for 10 scores, completing 60 percent of his 170 attempts with just four picks. WRs Sean Riley and Jamal Curtis have combined for 51 receptions for about 113 yards a game with five touchdowns.

DRAFT SLANT

–DE Malik Carney is making the most of whatever time he can get. He has played in only three games but has recorded 20 tackles in that limited time, which is tied for sixth on the team. Carney’s pass rush against Syracuse’s Dungey will be sorely missed if he does not get another waiver to play as he did last week against Virginia Tech.

ROSTER REPORT:

–DE Malik Carney was granted a waiver of his suspension for violation of NCAA rules regarding the sale of school-issued shoes and played against Virginia Tech. The school requested the waiver because the Heels were down several defensive players because of injuries and asked to stagger the games the senior misses.

–QB Chazz Surratt will miss the rest of the season because of a wrist injury that requires surgery. Surratt was suspended for three games at the start of the season and played in the loss to Miami. He was 4-of-10 passing in that loss with three interceptions. He played in nine games (seven starts) as a redshirt freshman in 2017.

–QB Cade Fortin, a true freshman, made his first career start in the loss to Virginia Tech but left the game at halftime after being injured. He was 10-of-18 for 97 yards and rushed for 57 yards on six carries, one a 40-yard run to help set up a field goal.

–RB Michael Carter, a sophomore, was named ACC Running Back of the Week after rushing for a career-high 165 yards on 18 carries in the loss to Virginia Tech.
