A Virginia Tech linebacker charged in the fatal beating of a Blacksburg, Va., man last month has been released on a $75,000 bond.

Freshman Isimemen Etute is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Jerry Smith, 40, on May 31. According to authorities, Etute visited Smith’s apartment after making a Tinder match with someone named “Angie,” only to find that his date was a man.

Etute told police he punched and stomped Smith. The medical examiner’s office said Smith died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Etute was granted a $75,000 secured bond on Wednesday, according to multiple news outlets. He is under house arrest and electronic monitoring and was ordered to stay with his parents and remain in contact with his attorney.

The 18-year-old has been suspended indefinitely by the university and the football team.

A native of Virginia Beach, Etute was a three-star member of the Hokies’ 2021 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder out of Frank W. Cox High School enrolled at Virginia Tech in January.
