Jackson beat out junior college transfer AJ Bush and true freshman Hendon Hooker, who are still competing for the No. 2 quarterback position.
“Looking back over his development, I’ve just been pleased with his consistency, his demeanor, his ability to process information,” Fuente said of Jackson, according to the Roanoke Times. “And some of the things that we gave him to work on over the summer, I think he made improvements on. It’s time for us to get those guys working together in terms of the first unit.
“The things that I’ve talked to Josh and all those guys about, whatever we do, whoever we name, that person still hasn’t proved anything on the field. We’ll continue to evaluate and develop those other guys.”
Jackson enrolled at Virginia Tech in January 2016, soon after Fuente was named Virginia Tech’s head coach after being hired away from Memphis.
Jackson, a dual-threat quarterback, is expected to add to a Virginia Tech offense that was good enough to capture the ACC Coastal Division championship last season.
Jackson sat out his freshman season in Blacksburg in 2016, so the Sept. 3 game against West Virginia will be his college debut.
The Mountaineers also have a new starting quarterback with Will Grier.
