A pair of teams in Texas will each use a void in their schedules to meet on the football field as Houston and Baylor agreed to play Sept. 19 at Waco.

College football teams typically set schedules years in advance, but the COVID-19 pandemic is making the ability to react on the fly a necessity.

Baylor was supposed to play its season opener at home Saturday against Louisiana Tech, but the Bulldogs had a COVID-19 outbreak and the game was canceled. Houston was scheduled to play Memphis on Sept. 19 but that game was called off because of an outbreak within the Tigers program.

Baylor will now get its first home game a week later than expected while both teams avoid losing a contest on the schedule.

The Houston and Baylor programs were not just thinking short term. After putting together next weekend’s game on the fly, they have also agreed to play a home-and-home series within the next six-eight years, according to a Sports Illustrated report.
