Former Florida Gators safety Tony Joiner was arrested Saturday and faces second-degree murder charges in connection with the 2016 death of his wife.

Heyzel Obando, 26, was found dead in her apartment in Fort Myers, Fla., on Valentine’s Day in 2016. Her death was ruled a homicide two months later and has gone unsolved for more than three years.

The Fort Myers News-Press reported that Joiner, 33, was arrested in Lake Wales, Fla., and booked in the Polk County Jail.

Joiner played safety at Florida from 2004-07 and served as a team captain during his senior season. He helped the Gators win the BCS national championship during the 2006 season.

Joiner’s former Gators teammate, tight end Aaron Hernandez, was convicted of first-degree murder in 2015 in the 2013 death of Odin Lloyd in Massachusetts.
