Former Kansas State star quarterback Michael Bishop said he is recovering from a stroke.
The 1998 Heisman Trophy runner-up revealed the health scare in a Twitter post on Monday.
“Thanks for all your prayers! I had a small stroke and a blood clot behind my left ear,” the 43-year-old Bishop wrote. “I’m recovering well and will have upcoming rehab to regain my strength.”
Bishop joined Kansas State as a junior-college transfer after leading Blinn College (Texas) to back-to-back national championships. He then guided the Wildcats to consecutive 11-win seasons.
Bishop passed for 2,844 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushed for 748 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, finishing second behind Texas running back Ricky Williams in the Heisman balloting.
In two seasons, he passed for 4,401 yards and 36 touchdowns and added 1,314 yards and 23 scores on the ground.
Bishop had a brief NFL career and was 3-for-9 passing for 80 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the New England Patriots in 2000. He later spent time in NFL Europe, the Arena Football League and the Canadian Football League.
