GAME BREAKDOWN

KEY MATCHUP: The Kansas defense generated just one takeaway in the Sept. 29 loss to Oklahoma State, but to have any chance at West Virginia on Oct. 6, the Jayhawks will have to be opportunistic. They still lead the Bowl Subdivision with a turnover margin of plus-12. Several defenders have been involved in turnovers, an indication the Jayhawks are looking for strips and pick. S Bryce Torneden has two fumble recoveries, while eight different Jayhawks have interceptions. Anything to disrupt QB Will Grier and the productive Mountaineers is necessary.

DRAFT SLANT

–WR Steven Sims probably will not receive a long look if he is a free agent invited to an NFL camp next fall because of his slight (5-10, 176) build. The senior does possess versatility, though, and showed he can be a threat on an end around rush in addition to catching a career-high 10 passes in the Sept. 29 loss to Oklahoma State. Sims also returns kicks for the Jayhawks and is capable of breaking big returns.

ROSTER REPORT

–QB Miles Kendrick sat out the loss to Oklahoma State after suffering an apparent shoulder injury a week earlier in the third quarter of the Baylor defeat. Kendrick is expected to remain sidelined at West Virginia. Kansas coach David Beaty said he has not made a decision to redshirt Kendrick, or any other Jayhawks.

–QB Carter Stanley was elevated into a starting role, ahead of Peyton Bender, who did not play against the Cowboys. Stanley will start the game at West Virginia.

–CB Ricky Thomas missed his second straight game with an undisclosed injury, though he participated in some drills during practices leading into the Oklahoma State game.

–S Mike Lee was shaken up in the second half against Oklahoma State but returned and should be available against West Virginia.
