Oklahoma’s Sooner Schooner has made its final ride of the football season.
The famed covered wagon toppled over after it attempted to make a sharp turn during the Sooners’ 52-14 victory over West Virginia on Saturday.
No one was seriously injured and horses weren’t hurt in the mishap, but the Schooner sustained damage and will be out of action for the team’s final two home games.
“We will repair the damaged Schooner and its future use will be for static display,” senior associate athletic director Kenny Mossman said in a statement. “It is possible that it will be back at a game this season, but it will not run. We also are in the process of having a new Schooner constructed. There is no timetable yet for when it will be ready. I would anticipate having it in time for the spring game.”
The Sooner Schooner, which was introduced in 1964 and became an official mascot in 1980, travels the field at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium after every Oklahoma score.
