Five-star quarterback Caleb Williams, the consensus top signal-caller in the 2021 class by 247sports’ composite, announced his commitment to Oklahoma on Saturday.

Williams made the announcement in an interview with CBS Sports, showing a highlight video that ended with him donning an Oklahoma jersey.

“I just felt like it was the best place for me overall,” Williams told CBS Sports. “I’ve got a year here, but I’m ready to go gain the trust of my teammates, earn the starting spot and hopefully bring them a national championship.”

From Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., Williams is the fourth-best recruit at any position by 247sports’ composite. A dual-threat quarterback, he was also considering LSU and Maryland, after nearly every major program pursued him.

Williams said head coach Lincoln Riley’s success with other quarterbacks played a significant role in his decision. The Sooners had consecutive first overall NFL draft picks in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray before Jalen Hurts was taken in the second round this April.

Williams, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 210 pounds, has been timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.57 seconds.

Spencer Rattler, a member of the 2019 class, is pegged as the favorite to win the starting job in 2020, with Tanner Mordecai also a potential candidate.

Mayfield, Murray and Hurts each joined Oklahoma as transfers.
