Alex Delton, who opened the season as TCU’s starting quarterback, has departed the team, coach Gary Patterson said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The fifth-year graduate transfer was in his first season at the school after spending the previous four at Kansas State.

Patterson declined to divulge the reason for Delton’s departure, saying it was between him and Delton.

“He’s a good guy. I like him,” Patterson said of Delton, who was a team captain. “I’d rather he stayed and fought through all of it … but that’s not my call.”

Ironically, Delton would have had a chance for playing time this Saturday against Baylor with the status of quarterbacks Max Duggan and Mike Collins yet to be determined due to unspecified injuries. Duggan, a true freshman, has started the past six games after replacing Delton.

Delton completed 27 of 50 passes for 318 yards and one interception, and he also rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries.

Delton’s departure comes less than a week after redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Rogers announced he was transferring.
