Texas is reportedly close to hiring former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash as defensive coordinator.

Longhorns head coach Tom Herman and Ash worked together at Ohio State on Urban Meyer’s staff during the Buckeyes’ 2014 national championship season.

Ash, 45, was fired in late September after a 1-3 start with the Scarlet Knights. He was 8-32 in three-plus seasons at Rutgers.

Ash has extensive experience as a defensive coordinator at Ohio State (2014-15), Arkansas (2013) and Wisconsin (2011-12).

Ash also served as the defensive backs coach at Iowa State in 2009 when Herman was the Cyclones’ offensive coordinator.

Texas fired defensive coordinator Todd Orlando earlier this month. The Longhorns (7-5) have allowed 28.9 points per game heading into their Dec. 31 date with No. 11 Utah (11-2) in the Alamo Bowl.
