Former Michigan quarterback Brandon Peters announced Tuesday that he is transferring to Illinois.

Peters will have two years of eligibility remaining. He is expected to compete for Illinois’ starting quarterback job this summer.

The former top-100 recruit sought a fresh start after falling behind Shea Patterson and Dylan McCaffrey on the Wolverines’ depth chart. Peters threw for 680 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions in limited action at Michigan.

Illinois finished 4-8 last season, including a 2-7 record in the Big Ten. Former backup quarterback Cam Thomas left the program in the middle of last season because of personal reasons, and fellow quarterback M.J. Rivers announced plans to transfer earlier this spring.
