Indiana redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Penix Jr. underwent season-ending surgery, the school announced Tuesday.

Penix had the operation on Monday to repair the right sternoclavicular joint, which is where the collarbone connects to the sternum.

“We feel really bad for Mike,” Indiana coach Tom Allen said in a statement. “He’s worked extremely hard and had a great season. He’ll recover from this and get bigger and stronger this offseason. Mike has a very bright future with the Hoosiers.”

Penix was injured in the second quarter of last Saturday’s win over Northwestern. He missed the previous game against Nebraska with an unrelated injury.

Penix performed well for the Hoosiers, completing 68.8 percent of his passes for 1,394 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 119 yards and two TDs on 22 carries.

Junior Peyton Ramsey will move into the starting role. He has completed 72 percent of his passes for 1,302 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions this season. Ramsey threw for a career-best 351 yards at Nebraska when Penix sat out.

Ramsey was the starter last season but was intercepted 13 times. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,875 yards and 19 scores in 2018.

Indiana (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) has a bye this weekend and then visits Penn State on Nov. 16.
