Iowa defensive back Jack Koerner sustained serious injuries when his personal watercraft collided with a boat on Friday in Missouri, according to police.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Koerner, 21, and another passenger were riding a Sea-Doo that struck the side of a speedboat on Lake of the Ozarks.

Koerner was transported by emergency workers to Lake Regional Hospital and Cole Coffin, also 21, was flown to University Hospital in Columbia, Mo. The police incident report said both men were seriously injured, but the exact nature of the injuries is not known.

The two men and one woman in the boat were not injured, according to the report.

Koerner originally joined the Hawkeyes as a walk-on in 2017. He was a key contributor to the Iowa defense in 2019 with 81 tackles, two fumble recoveries and one interception in 13 games, including 11 starts at free safety.

Koerner became a scholarship player this spring. The Des Moines native is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
