Brian Lewerke – Noteworthy
Following a strong sophomore season in which he led the Spartans to a 10-3 record and a Holiday Bowl victory, Lewerke suffered a right shoulder injury against Penn State and was never the same. He played through pain and was forced to sit out three games, with Rocky Lombardi replacing him and providing up and down performances. Now a senior, Lewerke’s ability to throw the ball with accuracy and velocity is key to reviving an offense that averaged just 18.7 points a game, including 12.3 points in the final seven games after Lewerke’s injury, and ranked 125th out of 129 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. They also ranked 126th in passing efficiency (101.37) and 116th in total offense (342.1 yards per game). Lombardi, now a sophomore, and redshirt freshman Theo Day could push for playing time if Lewerke’s shoulder is not healed. – Lansing State Journal
