Michigan wants to avoid viewing football coach Jim Harbaugh as the other one who got away.

Following the unexpected departure of basketball coach John Beilein on Monday, the Wolverines are planning to address the contract of Harbaugh, who was the third highest-paid coach in college football last season at $7.504 million in total pay.

“I stand by my decision and my statement that I want him to retire here,” athletic director Warde Manuel said.

Harbaugh, 55, is entering his fifth season as head coach of his alma mater. Michigan has three 10-3 seasons — including in 2018 — and an 8-5 record in 2017 under Harbaugh.

His contract calls for a 10 percent raise in 2020 and expires in 2021.

Beilein spent 12 seasons at Michigan and took the Wolverines to two Final Fours. But he interviewed with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday and by Monday afternoon was making plans to jump to the NBA and move his family to Ohio.
