University of Minnesota sophomore quarterback Zack Annexstad is out indefinitely because of a foot injury suffered in practice Friday.

“Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, and we feel terrible for Zack,” coach P.J. Fleck said in a statement.

“He worked extremely hard in the spring and summer to put himself in position to compete for the starting job, and I know he will recover from this setback to be even stronger. Zack is an elite teammate and person, and I look forward to him being an important part of the team as a leader while he is recovering.”

Annexstad won the first-string job as a true freshman last season, starting the first seven games before going down with injuries and making only one more appearance the rest of the season. He completed 97 of 187 passes for 1,277 yards, with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He was expected to compete through fall camp with redshirt sophomore Tanner Morgan, who went 4-2 as a starter to finish last season after Annexstad was 3-4. Morgan now becomes the likely starter for the Gophers’ opener vs. South Dakota State on Aug. 29.
