Minnesota coach Jerry Kill received a one-year contract extension through the 2018 season and a significant pay hike, the university announced Saturday.

Kill’s annual salary will rise to $2.1 million in 2014 from $1.2 million last year. His 2013 salary was the lowest in the Big Ten, according to data from USA Today. The new deal will make him the ninth highest-paid coach in the conference.

Despite Kill’s battle with epilepsy that kept him from coaching for portions of last season, the Gophers finished with an 8-5 record that included the first four-game conference winning streak since 1973.

Since Kill came to Minnesota from Northern Illinois in 2011, the Gophers have a 17-21 overall record and two straight bowl berths.
