Nebraska is sticking with Scott Frost for the long haul, announcing a two-year extension for the coach on Saturday morning.
The new deal extends the seven-year, $35 million deal Frost signed in 2017 and runs through the 2026 season.
The financial terms for the two additional years were not revealed. Frost is 8-14 with the Cornhuskers.
“Coach Frost has shown tremendous leadership in beginning to rebuild our football program,” a joint statement from chancellor Ronnie Green and athletic director Bill Moos read.
“We appreciate that a change of this nature will not happen overnight. We are committed to Scott and the direction he is taking this program. Scott is the right coach at the right time for this program.”
Nebraska (4-6, 2-5 Big Ten) lost 37-21 to Wisconsin on Saturday for its fourth consecutive loss.
The team has underperformed this season after opening at No. 24 in the AP Top 25. In Frost’s first season at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers were 4-8 (3-6 Big Ten) but rebounded from an 0-6 start.
Frost said after Saturday’s loss that he will get the once-proud program turned around.
“This is where I want to be,” Frost said.
“People in Nebraska know me pretty well and I’m a fighter and I’m not going to quit until this is right. We took the Nebraska job as a staff because we figured we had the runway to build this and build it the right way. In a lot of ways there was more work to be done than we even anticipated before we came to Lincoln, and there’s still things to do to get right.
“I’ve told you all I’ll talk more about that once the season is over because I want to focus on this team and what we have in front of us, but I’m grateful to the leadership here and I’m grateful to the fan base for believing in us. We are going to get this done. I think everybody, including me, hoped it would flip this year and it seems like we’re miles away and we are this close at the same time.”
Frost previously coached Central Florida, where he posted a 19-7 record in two seasons, including an undefeated 13-0 mark in 2017.
Frost, 44, was the starting quarterback for the Cornhuskers for two seasons, leading them to a 24-2 record and a share of the 1997 championship during his senior season.
