When you think about Nebraska, you think about power football, the I-Back and smash-mouth play in the trenches.

Don’t point that out to quarterback Taylor Martinez.

The 6-1, 200-pound Cornhusker junior shredded the Southern Mississippi defense for 354 yards through the air on Saturday. He completed 26 of 34 passes for five touchdowns and no interceptions in a 49-20 win. He averaged over 10 yards per pass attempt.

For his work, Martinez has been named the first NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week.

Throughout the 2012 season, the top passer in college football each week will be honored with this recognition from the National Rifle Association and Lindy’s Sports. At the end of the season, the NRA/Lindy’s National Gunslinger of the Year will be named.

Honorable Mention – To the list of all-time great passers, add the name of Sam Durley, probably the best throwing quarterback that you’ve never heard of.

On Saturday, the Division III Eureka (Ill.) College senior, completed 34 of 52 passes for 736 yards and five touchdowns, as the Red Devils scored 17 unanswered points to defeat Knox, 62-55.

Durley broke the all-time NCAA record for passing yards in a game at any level of competition. He averaged an incredible 21.6 yards per completion in the contest.
