GAME BREAKDOWN

KEY MATCHUP: Michigan’s front seven is among the fiercest and most physically dominant in the country, and its defense as a whole ranks third in the FBS, allowing only 240 yards per game. With two relatively inexperienced running backs stepping into larger roles after Larkin’s medical retirement, and an offense that continues to develop its identity, Northwestern’s offensive line will need to execute at a high level in order for the Wildcats to have success moving the ball. The Wildcats have surrendered six sacks in three games, while Michigan averages 2 1/2 sacks per game.

DRAFT SLANT

–QB Clayton Thorson completed 33-of-52 passes for a career-high 382 passing yards against Akron, adding three touchdowns but also committing three total turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble — all of which were returned for touchdowns. Thorson’s decision-making and ball security may come into question when being evaluated by NFL scouts heading into the 2019 draft.

ROSTER REPORT:

–RB Jeremy Larkin will serve as an undergraduate assistant coach as he continues to pursue his degree in the wake of his medical retirement. Larkin was the team’s leading rushing with 346 yards and five touchdowns on 72 carries.

–QB Clayton Thorson is now Northwestern’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 47, passing Brett Basanez and Len Williams.
