Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching after stepping down from his post earlier this year.

“I’m not there at the moment,” Meyer told Cleveland.com when asked if he’d consider coaching in 2020. “Like you said, next year can I say that? We’ll talk again next year and we’ll see.”

Meyer’s response is a change from where he was in May, when he told The Columbus Dispatch, “All I’m going to say is I believe I’m done (coaching). I think I’m done.”

Meyer, 55, retired after the Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl earlier this year. The decision came as the result of an arachnoid cyst Meyer was diagnosed with in 1998 that has caused pain in the left side of his head.

It was Meyer’s second retirement for medical reasons. After the 2010 season, he left Florida, citing health concerns. He worked in television in 2011 and became Ohio State’s head coach in 2012. During his career with the Buckeyes, he was 83-9 with a national title.

Since walking away from coaching, Meyer has worked as an assistant athletic director with the Buckeyes, a teacher and a TV analyst. The time away from the sideline has served his health well, though he’s still heavily invested in the success of the program.

“About as good as you can get,” Meyer said. “Especially that the program is doing so well, because that’s very important to me. That would be a bad feeling right now if they were struggling.”
