Former Middle Tennessee State safety Brandon Archer drowned Monday in the Buffalo River near Lobelville, Tenn. He was 21.

NBC affiliate News 4 in Tennessee reported Archer had been canoeing with friends when the group stopped to swim. Authorities said it is believed his sandal caught on a log and he was swept under the water.

He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Memphis in 2015 and from Middle Tennessee State in August with a degree in leisure, sports and tourism studies.

With the Blue Raiders, he was a reserve who never saw any game action.

The program issued a statement that read: “We are saddened to hear about the loss of former Blue Raider Brandon Archer. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
