OT Catch Wins Another for Tulane, Gives Another Loss to Houston

It was supposed to be a banner season for the Houston Cougars, ranked in the preseason Top 25 by Lindy’s, one of the American Athletic Conference favorites.

Not so for Tulane, ranked No. 93 in the preseason by Lindy’s, in the lower half of the AAC, a team that “could challenge for a bowl bid.”

So far, Lindy’s – and most everybody else – has been wrong. It has been two teams going in different directions.

Last Friday night’s game in Houston when the Green Wave came to town gave proof to what happened in September. Tulane’s third-team quarterback Kai Horton and All-AAC running back Tayjae Spears delivered the evidence.

The tight, back-and-forth game ended 21-21 in regulation. Overtime would determine the winner.

After Houston (2-3) kicked a field goal to take a 24-21 lead, Tulane (4-1) got the ball. Horton had to replace starting quarterback Justin Ibieta after the team’s first offensive possession. Ibieta had completed all five of his passes. Horton had only thrown one pass all season.

But in the overtime, Spears hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Horton to earn the 27-24 win.

That touchdown reception has been chosen as the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish “Catch of the Week.”

For the game, Horton completed 11 of 21 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner.

Spears was Tulane’s leading receiver and rusher. He caught all six passes thrown in his direction for 85 yards and the winning score. He also ran for 54 yards.

Remember … for the tailgate tent or the pre-game party, U. S. Farm-Raised Catfish is always “the winning catch.”

The Catfish Institute, or TCI, was formed in 1986 by catfish farmers and feed manufacturers to raise consumer awareness of the positive qualities of U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish. Since its formation, U.S. per capita consumption has more than doubled.

U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish is a sustainable and environmentally friendly seafood product. The National Audubon Society, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Environmental Defense all recommend U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish as a safe environmental choice. To find out more, visit www.uscatfish.com.
