Bo Nix was named starting quarterback for Auburn on Tuesday and he is set to become only the second true freshman to start a season opener in school history.

The school announced the decision on its Twitter account. The Tigers open the campaign against Oregon on Aug. 31 at Arlington, Texas.

Travis Tidwell, who started the opener in 1946, is the only true freshman to take the first snap.

Nix beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood in a spirited competition that began in the spring.

Nix is the son of Patrick Nix, a quarterback for Auburn from 1992-95. Patrick Nix passed for 4,957 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Bo Nix was coached by his father at Pinson Valley High outside Birmingham and accounted for 161 touchdowns (127 passing, 34 rushing).

Jarrett Stidham was Auburn’s starter the past two seasons. He declared for the NFL draft after last season and was a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots.
