Brigham Young head football coach Bronco Mendenhall will stay in Provo, Utah, at least through the 2016 season.
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe announced Wednesday that Mendenhall’s contract, which was set to expire at the end of the 2013 season, has been extended for three years.
“I am thrilled to have Bronco signed as our head football coach through the 2016 season,” Holmoe said Holmoe before BYU’s media day in Provo. “Over the past eight seasons, his leadership has guided our football program back to national prominence through top-25 rankings, bowl victories, All-American athletes and overall excitement at LaVell Edwards Stadium. I look forward to what the next four years will bring with the new era of BYU football.”
Mendenhall has compiled a 74-29 record at BYU since taking over the program in 2005. He has guided the Cougars to eight straight bowl invitations. The Cougars’ record in those bowl games is 6-2. BYU is one of only seven programs to win six bowl games since 2005.
“BYU is a special place and this is a special time,” Mendenhall said. “I’m excited to build on the success of our program over past eight years, and I think there’s much more that we can accomplish at BYU.”
