Notre Dame running back Jafar Armstrong, who started the opener at Louisville before leaving early, could miss up to two months because of an injury to his groin area, The Athletic reported on Wednesday.

Coach Brian Kelly told reporters that Armstrong was to undergo an MRI exam in his groin/abdominal on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. The Athletic reported that a five-week layoff would be the optimistic timeline for Armstrong to return.

Armstrong touched the ball three times on Notre Dame’s opening drive, with two rushes for 10 yards and one catch for 16 yards before leaving the game. The Irish won 35-17 on Monday night.

Tony Jones Jr. stepped in for Armstrong and rushed 15 times for a team-high 110 yards and a touchdown.

Those two were slated to tag-team the production lost with the departure of 2018 starter Dexter Williams. Armstrong rushed for 383 yards and seven touchdowns on 72 carries in 10 games last season, also catching 14 passes for 149 yards.

Notre Dame next plays Sept. 14 in its home opener against New Mexico.
