The NCAA on Tuesday suspended Central Michigan quarterback David Moore after he tested positive for a banned substance.
The school will appeal the suspension, announcing its plans after a meeting involving Moore, athletic director Michael Alford and head coach Jim McElwain.
If Central Michigan’s appeal is denied, Moore’s suspension will be for one year, beginning from the day he tested positive.
Moore can practice but will not be able to play during the appeal process, which stems from the university believing the QB’s “use of an over-the-counter nutritional supplement as the likely cause of the positive test result.”
“The university partners with the NCAA to ensure its student-athletes play by the rules and exhibit the highest level of conduct,” Alford said in a released statement. “Based on the university’s review of the available evidence, the university has decided to appeal this ruling.”
Moore, a junior transfer from Memphis who has been starting since Quinten Dormady suffered a knee injury, has completed 94 of 164 passes for 1,143 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions while going 2-2 during his stint with the 3-3 Chippewas.
It is possible that Dormady will return to action for Saturday’s home game against New Mexico State.
