Boise State senior Avery Williams matched the FBS record for career return touchdowns with his ninth during the Broncos’ contest against San Jose State in Saturday’s Mountain West championship game at Las Vegas.

Williams returned a punt 69 yards with 2:48 left in the third quarter to tie the mark held by former Washington returner Dante Pettis (2014-17).

The punt return touchdown was Williams’ second of this season and sixth of his career. He also has three kickoff return scores, two coming this season.

In matching the record, Williams fielded the punt near the right sideline, maneuvered to his left and then jetted up field. Cruising down the sideline with only punter Elijah Fischer to beat and Williams dove toward the end zone with the ball scraping the pylon for a touchdown that brought the Broncos within 19-13.

All nine of Pettis’ career return scores came on punts.
