Former Southern California quarterback Jack Sears will play at Boise State beginning next season, as the Broncos announced Sears’ transfer on Monday.
Having obtained his undergraduate degree at USC, Sears will be eligible to play immediately for the Broncos, and he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The move brings to an end a nearly year-long journey for Sears, who left the Trojans program last August after falling to fourth on the depth chart during camp. Coming out of spring practice last year, Sears was believed to be in contention with sophomore JT Daniels for the starting job. However, by the time camp ended, Sears was also behind freshman Kedon Slovis and redshirt junior Matt Fink.
From there, Sears entered the transfer portal.
Daniels sustained a season-ending knee injury in the opener, and both Slovis and Fink also saw substantial time with the Trojans.
Sears announced his commitment to San Diego State in December, signing a grant-in-aid with the school. However, after Aztecs head coach Rocky Long stepped down and Brady Hoke was named his replacement in January, Sears changed his mind.
Sears will compete with Hank Bachmeier at Boise. As a true freshman in 2019, Bachmeier completed 137 of 219 passes for 1,879 yards, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, despite injuries limiting him to eight games. The Broncos were 7-1 in the games in which Bachmeier played, the only loss coming to Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Sears played in one game in his Trojans career, completing 20 of 28 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions against Arizona State in 2018. Sears started in place of Daniels, who had to sit out due to a concussion.
