Ryan Agnew – Noteworthy
San Diego State quarterback Ryan Agnew operated very successfully out of a spread formation when he played at Carroll High in Southlake, Texas. So Agnew, who passed for 6,967 yards with 56 touchdowns and rushed for 2,286 yards and an additional 38 TDs during his high school career, was as excited as anyone when he heard SDSU was going to a spread formation this season. “When you think spread, you think high school football,” Agnew said. “You think run and gun. Throw it around the yard. Running when you need to.” “You love it, but you want to do whatever it takes to win football games. If that means getting under center and we need to run it 40 times or get in the shotgun and run it or throw it, whatever it is we need to be in the best position to win.”

Agnew and his fellow SDSU quarterbacks – junior transfer Jordon Brookshire, sophomore Mark Salazar (Rancho Bernardo High) and redshirt freshman Carson Baker (Helix High) – took the first step toward spreading things out on Monday afternoon when the Aztecs opened spring practice. SDSU head coach Rocky Long was asked before practice why the Aztecs are introducing the spread now. Why not a year ago, or a year from now? “There’s no reason to change things as long as you’re being successful,” Long said. “The worst thing to do is try to make problems where there weren’t any. Well, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to or we should have last year (losing five of their last six games to finish 7-6). – San Diego Union Tribune
