UNLV has been unable to have stability at the quarterback position in recent years, and the Rebels are faced with that problem again.

UNLV confirmed that starting quarterback Armani Rogers will be sidelined indefinitely because of a foot injury.

Rogers was injured in the fourth quarter of the Sept. 22 loss to Arkansas State.

Rogers has not been much of a passer, but he is a major threat as a runner. He is averaging 122 rushing yards per game, which ranks eighth in the nation among FBS schools. He is already second in school history in career rushing yardage by a quarterback with 1,268 yards.

As a passer he has completed just 41.5 percent of his throws for 369 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. He has been sacked 11 times in the four games he played this year.

So the Rebels, who are 2-2 and coming off a bye, will have a new starting quarterback for their Mountain West opener at home against New Mexico this weekend.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that not since 1996 has UNLV had a quarterback start every game in a season.

Max Gilliam is in line to be the starter now. Gilliam started his college career at Cal and transferred to a junior college last year before winding up at UNLV.

Gilliam has attempted just one pass this season, and he completed it but for no yards.
