UNLV running back Darran Williams will retire from football after a medical episode last week revealed that he has an enlarged heart and will require the use of a defibrillator, his father told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The younger Williams, who turned 22 last week, suffered a heart attack during a team workout. He recently came out of a medically-induced coma and was expected to leave the hospital soon, per the newspaper.
Despite the unexpected retirement, the younger Williams will remain with the UNLV program in an unspecified capacity. He will also remain on scholarship, but won’t factor against the program’s 85-man limit.
A junior-college transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Williams carried 25 times for 79 yards and a touchdown in his first season with the Rebels in 2019. He caught two passes for 11 yards in five games.
