Washington and Utah, two teams whose weekend opponents were unavailable due to COVID-19 issues, will match up Saturday in Seattle.
The Pac-12 announced the newly scheduled game Tuesday night, hours after Arizona State was forced to cancel its home matchup with the Utes. The annual Apple Cup rivalry game between Washington and Washington State, slated for Friday, was called off on Sunday due to COVID-19 concerns in the Cougars’ program.
The Utah-Arizona State game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was pushed back to Sunday to give the Sun Devils extra time to recover from a COVID-19 outbreak. When it was clear by Tuesday that Arizona State still wouldn’t be ready to go by Sunday, the game was canceled.
The Pac-12 then stepped in to give the Utes and Huskies a contest this weekend.
“The scheduling of this game is consistent with the Conference’s commitment to provide opportunities for student-athletes through maximum scheduling flexibility while still prioritizing health and safety,” the Pac-12 wrote in a statement.
Utah and Washington will kick off at 10:30 p.m. ET in a game that will air on ESPN.
The Utes (0-1, 0-1 Pac-12) lost 33-17 to Southern California last weekend after scheduled games vs. Arizona and at UCLA were lost due to COVID-19 problems.
The Huskies (2-0, 2-0) also had their scheduled season opener, at Cal, canceled. They subsequently beat Oregon State 27-21 before defeating Arizona 44-27, with both games in Seattle.
